Private market investor Capital Dynamics has confirmed the acquisition of a ready-topbuild battery energy storage system in County Kerry.
The new project is among the first long duration energy projects in Ireland and has secured grid connection capacity of 170MW at the neighbouring 110kV Knockanure substation. Having secured planning consent in Autumn 2025, work has started on procurement and delivery planning.

The project aims to tap into a significant bottleneck for the Iriah energy transition. Ireland targets to derive 80% of its electricity from renewables by 2030. To reach this target, LDES capacity will need to reach approximately 2.4GW2. But at present there is only 0.29GW of LDES on the Irish grid, according to research by Cornwall Insight.
Commenting on the acquisition, Barney Coles, senior managing director and co-head of Clean Energy at Capital Dynamics, said: “We are pleased to announce our first investment in the Republic of Ireland and add to our growing portfolio of LDES projects in the broader Irish Single Electricity Market. At a time when renewable generation continues to grow, BESS projects are required to offer local businesses and communities an efficient and fast way to strengthen energy security and grid resilience.
“The Republic of Ireland represents one of the most compelling storage markets in Europe and combines a high and rising share of renewable generation with a clear policy commitment to decarbonise its grid. Taken together, this creates a structural demand for BESS solutions, and we look forward to supporting the build-out of the country’s low-carbon energy network” he added.
