Qantas and Airbus to invest $200m in Australia’s sustainable fuels industry
Qantas Group and Airbus have announced an investment of $200m in the Australian sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) industry. The two companies have signed the Australian Sustainable Aviation Fuel Partnership. Qantas has previously stated that SAF will account for 10% of the airline’s fuel mix by 2030. According to the announcement from Qantas, the companies will invest in “locally developed and produced SAF and feedstock initiatives. Projects will have to be commercially viable and meet a strict set of criteria around environmental sustainability”. Initially, the partnership is a five-year endeavour with the possibility of further extension. Scaling up the SAF industry is widely regarded as a critical step in the aviation sector’s decarbonisation strategy.
