IEA: energy crisis underscores urgency of Africa’s energy transition
The global energy crisis has highlighted the urgent need for African countries to accelerate the scale up of cheaper and cleaner sources of energy, according to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) Africa Energy Outlook 2022. IEA analysis also shows that Africa is currently facing severe effects of climate change including droughts in many regions. The AEO 2022 makes the broader argument that both in the short and long term, an energy transition in Africa and growth in associated industries, such as hydropower, solar and hydrogen, are critical to sustainable economic development across the continent.
