An American private market firm has pledged to invest $20m in carbon-negative cement on the sidelines of the UN Ocean Conference taking place in Nice this week.
Pegasus Capital Advisors, a private markets firm focused on climate solutions, has committed to investing $20m in green materials company Partanna Global, in a bid to support the rollout of Partanna Ocean – a subsidiary aiming to bolster coastal resilience.
The initiative seeks to deliver nature-positive infrastructure at scale and to unlock blended finance solutions – including grants and climate-aligned capital – to accelerate deployment in emerging markets.
Partanna states that while conventional cement emits carbon, its own cement reverses this damage by capturing and storing carbon. It also claims that the material’s properties strengthen when exposed to seawater.
A similar material was launched in 2022 by Japanese corporations, with backing from the Japanese government.
The Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR), with its investment arm managed by Pegasus Capital, is a multi-partner initiative established to support the resilience and restoration of coral reefs around the world. It acts both as a funding mechanism and a coalition of public and private partners working together to protect coral reef ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. Member countries include Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Ecuador, Mozambique, the Maldives, and others.
