World Bank director says some developing countries are taking significant steps towards adopting renewables

In an article for the World Bank, Demetrios Papathanasiou global director for the World Bank's energy and extractives global practice, finds that some developing countries are taking significant steps towards adopting renewable energy. For example, over 40% of installed energy capacity in Morocco is now from renewable energy projects. This number is expected to exceed 50% by 2030. Similarly India has achieved significant growth in renewable electricity expansion. Such case studies offer useful insights according to Papathanasiou, “these examples serve as a guiding light to other countries, which still lack a reliable pipeline of bankable projects. Challenges include grid integration technical constraints, inadequate regulatory frameworks, and weak procurement and planning capacity”.
