Aviation industry body calls on governments to adopt decarbonisation targets for the sector

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called on governments to support the industry's net-zero ambitions by adopting targets and goals that align with the October 2021 IATA decision of targeting net zero by 2050. Willie Walsh, IATA’s director general, said: “I am optimistic that governments will support the industry’s ambition with an agreement on a Long Term Aspirational Goal at the upcoming [International Civil Aviation Organization] ICAO Assembly. People want to see aviation decarbonise. They expect the industry and governments to be working together. The industry’s determination to achieve net zero by 2050 is firm. How would governments explain the failure to reach an agreement to their citizens?” Recent polls by IATA suggest that climate action by airlines is a key customer expectation.
