BloombergNEF: net-zero road transport by 2050 ‘still possible’

Emissions from the road transport sector could still be on track for net zero by 2050, according to strategic research provider BloombergNEF (BNEF). There are, however, a wide range of factors that need to be taken into account – including charging infrastructure, supply chains and electrification. Most notable of these is the rate of EV adoption across the world. The BNEF report states: "Passenger electric vehicle (EV) sales are set to grow rapidly in the next few years, rising from 6.6 million sold in 2021 to 21 million in 2025. The fleet of EVs on the road hits 77 million by 2025 and 229 million by 2030, based on BNEF’s Economic Transition Scenario.” EVs help to reduce oil demand growth in the road transport sector, which accounts for a significant portion of its carbon footprint.
