Climeworks says direct air capture needs to scale up

Direct air capture (DAC) firm Climeworks has analysed the current state of play in the DAC industry, using insights from policy experts, scientists and advocates, and has called for the carbon removal sector to be “supercharged”. In a report, it states: "We are incredibly excited to see the unprecedented attention and traction that DAC has received over the last 12-18 months: fast-growing demand, increased financing and support and public funding. However, transforming this momentum into actual capacity will necessitate a new level of global growth." According to Climeworks, the DAC industry is still in its nascent stages and will need to execute projects at significant scale in the near future in order to serve the broader net-zero agenda. Within carbon-removal industries, there are multiple stakeholders – firms, consumers, governments and capital – that all have a role to play.
