Fondaction, a Quebec-based labour-sponsored fund managing over C$4.25bn, made the commitment to the Value Nature Fund I, which was first announced during COP16 in Cali.
The fund will focus on three key priorities: biodiversity and ecosystem services, climate mitigation and adaptation, and community wellbeing. Its strategy involves building partnerships with farm and forest managers to transition, expand and diversify assets with high regenerative potential across selected row crops, permanent crops and closer-to-nature forestry.
"Natural capital represents a structural response to ecosystem degradation, helping institutional investors address financial risks that can no longer be overlooked," said Jonathan Coupland, portfolio manager at Fondaction. "Our commitment to Value Nature Fund I reflects our conviction that patient, well-structured capital can drive meaningful system change, and that Canadian institutional investors have both the responsibility and the opportunity to lead that transition."
