Sampension’s renewables subsidiary acquires 89MW onshore wind portfolio
NRGi Renewables, a company owned by Denmark’s Sampension has acquired a portfolio of 25 onshore wind turbines. The acquisition marks a milestone for the company – the capacity of its wind energy holdings now exceeds 200MW, spread across 72 onshore turbines. If solar assets are included, the portfolio has a capacity of 380MW.
“We believe in the long-term electrification of Danish society, and this requires investments in the green transition”, says the company’s chief executive Jakob Bundgaard. “With the acquisition, we are also strengthening a portfolio that provides clear advantages in our ongoing operating activities and supports the further and necessary expansion of renewable energy plants”, he adds.
For Sampension, which manages over $47bn, the transaction aligns with its own portfolio decarbonisation plans. Over the past five years, the pension fund has reduced the environmental footprint of its holdings by 51%.
Torbjørn Lange, head of properties and infrastructure at Sampension says the transaction is significant on two counts. “Both in terms of streamlining the wind farms in the portfolio for the benefit of our pension customers' returns and the green transition. But also, in terms of expanding and scaling our really good collaboration with the NRGi group through NRGi Renewables”, he commented.
Lange says the long-term market demand for wind turbines provides a tailwind for NRGi’s commercial prospects. “We see long-term potential in optimizing and extending the lifespan of wind turbines or alternatively re-powering projects with further expansion of capacity”, he notes.
The transaction is subject to regulatory approval by Danish competition authorities.
