Europe’s 2026 heatwave brings climate catastrophe risk into focus

Aon’s analysis of catastrophe risk in H1 2026 highlights emerging climate vulnerabilities

Slovakian summer this year has been unusually warm. Never before had temperatures in June soared to over 41°C – a new record. Slovakia is not alone. 17 European countries saw temperatures exceed their all-time high June temperatures this year.

Aon, an insurer, reckons this was one of the most intense heat waves ever recorded in Europe. New analysis published by the insurance behemoth sheds light on the financial implications of catastrophe risk in the first half of the year.

The report highlights the need to map emerging climate vulnerabilities, whilst moving beyond historical and headline loss estimates.

Headline loss

As a headline number, Aon estimates global economic losses from natural disasters at $111bn – the lowest since 2018. The devastating Venezuelan earthquake accounted for nearly 25% of the count.

The headline number masks finer details. For instance, single event losses that exceeded $1bn. There were 23 such events in the first half of 2026. Venezuela’s example sits alongside Windstorm Kristin in Portugal, Typhoon Sinlaku in the Pacific and 13 such events in the US alone.

13 of these were $1bn insured loss events. Historically, on average, 10 such instances have been recorded each year. “Headline global loss figures can obscure where risk is actually accumulating", says Aon’s head of catastrophe insight Michal Lörinc.

In a statement released alongside the report, Aon notes a key implication of its findings. "The findings highlight how catastrophe risk is shaped not only by total losses but also by where the events occur and their impacts on people, infrastructure, operations and supply chains”, it reads.

“The first half of 2026 showed how regional events can have significant financial, operational and human consequences even when global loss totals appear moderate. Looking beyond the global total provides a clear view of the impacts facing communities and organizations”, Lörinc explains.

Historical reference

Aon’s research highlights key learnings from Europe’s heatwave this year. One such lesson is that insured loss estimates might not always reflect the full extent of climate-driven weather extremes.

A persistent high-pressure system was to blame for the 2026 record high June heat and the over 1000 fatalities it was linked to. This number, Aon’s research expects, will rise.

The trends, according to the report, reinforce an existing understanding. “Europe, the world’s fastest warming continent, is likely to experience more frequent, intense and prolonged heatwaves”, the report predicts.

These patterns also highlight the perils of relying excessively on past estimates.

Estimates from the World Weather Attribution scientific report, which Aon’s analysis cites, shows that in June 1976, the 2026 temperatures were considered ‘virtually impossible”. A warmer climate baseline implies the probability of significantly higher temperatures.

“Historical loss experience is becoming a less reliable guide to future risk”, says Liz Henderson, Aon’s global head of climate risk advisory.

“Events like this year's European heatwaves demonstrate how emerging vulnerabilities can create new areas of risk that may not always be reflected in insured losses”, she adds.
