ACCR says Woodside could have provided misleading information to Western Australia’s environmental regulator

Australian Centre for Corporate Responsibility (ACCR), an Australian research and shareholder advocacy organisation has opposed the Western Australia Environmental Protection Authority’s (EPA) recommended approval of Woodside Energy’s proposal to extend the life of the karratha gas plant to 2070 (the North West Shelf or NWS extension). ACCR’s concerns with the approval include the expected lifetime carbon footprint of the project and the possibility that Woodside could have provided misleading information in the proposal. ACCR’s lead carbon analyst Alex Hillman said, “The extension of the North West Shelf at full capacity to 2070 would facilitate the release of 3.8bn tonnes of CO2 and pave the way for the opening of new gas basins, such as the Browse project and the Canning Basin. This proposal demonstrates that Woodside has no genuine intention of transitioning away from fossil fuels, even though half of its investors have voted in favour of the company setting scope 3 emission targets”.
