IEA: transitions need resilient supply chains

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has published a report outlining the supply chain needs of an energy transition. The report argues that as a transition progresses, supply chains designed for fossil fuels will be replaced with those that provide the necessary infrastructure for inputs such as minerals and materials that renewable technologies depend on. Given that these supply chains are of critical importance to energy transitions, the IEA makes the case that governments will need to identify and address vulnerabilities in order to ensure that these supply chains are resilient and secure. The report discusses a range of technologies from solar PVs to hydrogen and batteries. The report proposes a set of strategies to build these supply capacities, “diversify, accelerate, innovate, collaborate and invest”.
