Australian Ethical expands private markets climate solutions portfolio

Australian Ethical, a superannuation fund provider and manager has announced the launch of its Growth Opportunities Fund. The fund, which expands Australian Ethical’s private markets offering, includes a thematic focus on decarbonisation and real assets.

Australian Ethical’s CIO Ludovic Theau says the new growth fund offers a private markets solution aligned with Australia’s journey to net zero.

“The biggest opportunity to capitalise on and support Australia’s net zero transition is in private markets. We’re leveraging our expertise, capability and networks to partner with some of the best specialists and managers to democratise access to these opportunities for wholesale channels, and we're co-investing capital to take advantage of and support these opportunities together”, Theau commented.

The fund covers five thematic areas – digitalisation, decarbonisation, urbanisation, circular economy and demographics. In a statement, Australian Ethical said initial commitments from the fund include recycling infrastructure, battery storage and renewable energy.

Australia’s government-backed investor – Clean Energy Finance Corporation – has backed the fund with a cornerstone commitment of up to approximately $88m. According to CEFC, the commitment is aimed at a portfolio of ‘diversified portfolio of renewable energy, infrastructure, natural capital and climate tech assets’.

“This investment demonstrates how the CEFC can use its existing assets to help catalyse new market offerings and support the next phase of growth for sustainable finance”, said Heechung Sung, CEFC’s executive director.

“By backing a new institutional vehicle with CEFC investments, we are helping to establish a scalable platform for climate-focused assets, crowding in capital and expanding the reach of sustainable finance to a broader audience to accelerate Australia’s decarbonisation”, she added.

CEFC’s investment sits alongside a seed commitment from Australian Ethical of over $352m.

The investment strategy is aligned with the Australian Ethical’s in-house Ethical Charter – which has been around for nearly 40 years. Alignment with the charter has driven Australian Ethical’s climate solutions investments in renewable energy across listed and corporate fixed income assets classes.
